Simple depth-based techniques to avoid over- or under-watering mistakes.
Depth matters
Dry topsoil can hide a soggy core. Probe 5–10 cm deep for small pots and 10–15 cm for large ones.
Three easy methods
- Finger or chopstick: feel/see moisture at depth.
- Weight test: lift the pot—learn the dry vs wet weight over time.
- Moisture meter: useful trend indicator; calibrate with finger tests.
Reading results
If the root zone is consistently wet, improve drainage and reduce frequency. If it dries too fast, upgrade the mix or pot size.
