Watering shortcuts and do-anywhere potting mixes that reduce beginner mistakes.
Simple watering rules
- Check before you pour: test moisture 3–5 cm deep (small pots) or 8–10 cm (large).
- Water thoroughly, then drain; avoid frequent sips.
- Stretch intervals in winter; plants drink less in low light.
Easy, forgiving mixes
- Aroids & vines (Pothos, Philodendron): coco/peat + perlite + fine bark.
- Succulent-leaning (Snake Plant, ZZ): add pumice/grit for faster drying.
- General beginner blend: 2 parts base + 1 part perlite + 1 part bark.
Red flags
Chronically wet center, sour smell, algae on soil, or gnats = overwatering and poor aeration. Up the perlite/bark and lengthen intervals.
