What to look for

  • Spider mites: stippling and fine webbing, especially under leaves.
  • Mealybugs: cottony clusters in leaf axils and roots.
  • Scale: hard bumps along stems/leaf midribs; sticky honeydew.
  • Fungus gnats: tiny flies from wet soil; yellow sticky traps reveal adults.

Rapid response

  • Isolate the plant; wipe leaves and stems with soapy water or alcohol on a cotton swab (spot test first).
  • Improve airflow and adjust watering; replace top 2–3 cm of soggy soil if needed.
  • Repeat treatments weekly for 3–4 weeks to break life cycles.
