How to take usable light readings with a phone and match levels to low-light species.
Why measure?
Objective readings help you decide which plants will succeed. Even simple phone light-meter apps can estimate lux well enough for houseplant decisions.
How to measure
- Stand where the plant will live; hold the phone sensor facing the light source.
- Take daytime readings at different hours; note highs and lows.
- Aim for ~500–2,000 lux (≈50–200 fc) for low-light tolerant species.
Interpreting results
- <300 lux: very dim; consider Aspidistra or ZZ, or add supplemental light.
- 500–1,500 lux: workable for Pothos, Philodendron, Aglaonema, Peace Lily.
- 2,000+ lux: bright-indirect; wider options available.
Pro tips
Measure at plant height; sheer curtains cut intensity; winter sun is lower and readings drop.
