Top early indicators
- Yellowing or droopy leaves even when soil feels moist.
- Soft, translucent stems near the base.
- Foul, earthy smell emerging from the pot.
Root inspection guide
Unpot gently and rinse the root ball. Healthy roots are pale and firm. Rotting roots are dark, slippery, and may lose their outer layer when pinched, exposing the central threadlike core.
Smell test
A sharp sour or rotten odor indicates anaerobic conditions. If roots smell clean and earthy, they’re safe.
Immediate step
Trim off any darkened roots and re-evaluate your watering rhythm and drainage setup.
